Description
The legal profession has been a flourishing career option for a long time now. Not only does it yield money and social status, but also gives one the opportunity to contribute to societal good on a larger scale.
Requirements
While a number of colleges across the country admit students on the basis of their scores at the class XII level, some institutes require students to appear for an entrance exam. Admissions to the UG and PG level courses at any of the 14 national law universities are based on a student’s performance at the all-India entrance examination, Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).
Job Prospects
A student can pursue litigation (contest in legal proceedings), work at law firms and legal departments of corporate houses, non-profit sectors, NGOs or pursue higher studies. One could also engage in policy research for the government or private organisations. Corporate and company law is often considered an all-time favourite among legal professionals due to the remuneration and regular work hours. The job of a corporate lawyer primarily involves advising companies across a range of industries.
Pros & Cons
Lawyers can experience very exciting, highly paid and interesting careers. They can also suffer from extreme stress, guilt and alienation after years of dealing with humans in crisis. Whether the benefits of being a lawyer outweigh the drawbacks is largely a matter of individual preference.
